ROXANNE’S STORY

Shy, stray Roxanne arrived at the shelter with six kittens.  She was only about two years old.  She was a loving, kind mother cat, but she didn’t trust people.  After her kittens were adopted out, she’d ‘mother’ other shelter kittens.  One was four-month-old Pawly (renamed Mija).  After eight-nine days in the shelter, Roxanne was adopted out, along with Mija.  She went to their new home first.  She was so shy, she hid behind a wall unit in the home office.  Her owners only knew she was there because the litter box was used and the food disappeared each night!  Once Mija arrived Roxanne began to come out.  Now she chases Mija throughout the house. They are quite the pair, even teaming up to catch a mouse!

The Tombstone Small Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.We are dedicated to finding homes for unwanted and abandoned animals in the Tombstone area and educating the public in the benefits of spaying and neutering.  We proudly comply with national no-kill standards.  We don’t euthanize except when injury, disease, or temperament makes other options impossible.  All animals are spayed or neutered and vaccinated before leaving the shelter.  Animals are never given or sold for research.

MORRIS & ATINA’S STORY

In November, 2019, one-year-old Atina arrived at the shelter with three kittens.  Having been a stray, she didn’t trust people.Two-year-old Morris was surrendered by his owner in December 2019.  He was adopted out, But returned five days later for not getting along with another cat in the family.  Morris & Atina were put together,  and because he was outgoing and liked people it was thought he might be a good influence on her.  They quickly bonded and Atina (renamed Tina) learned to be more trusting.  After 142 days in the shelter (93 days for Morris), the two cats were adopted out together.  Shy Tina watched Morris interacting with the owners and the other family cats.  She began playing with toys and chasing Morris and sleeping with the other cats.  Now she gets along with everyone!

TORI’S STORY

Tori was a pit-bull mix stray brought into the shelter in November, 2019.  She was people-friendly, but also loud and constantly wanting attention.  She had medical issues: an infected eye, pancreatitis, and a bruised leg. As time went on, she became depressed.  Volunteers worried about her mental state.  After 188 days she was adopted — just when it was discovered she had valley fever.  Her new owner took her anyway.  She loves her new home, and her adopter spoils her.  She is still on meds, but is back to being her friendly, cheerful self.  She loves going visiting in the car.  She has a great life and is much loved.

ZINNIA’S STORY

Zinnia, a rat terrier mix, was surrendered to the shelter in 2018. She was soon adopted.  She had a good life and loved going to the dog park.  However, two years later she was overweight, showed signs of incontinence, and had diabetes.  She was dropped off at the shelter again.  After 18 days, amazing new owners adopted her.  She adjusted to her new life quickly and became quite a snuggler.  Today her diabetes has leveled off and she is maintaining her health although she needs insulin twice a day.  Her favorite hobbies include sun bathing and going for walks.  She is doing fantastic!

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE YEAR 2020:

• Returned 23 dogs and 4 cats to owners
• Took in 87 kittens under the age of 5 months
• Had 18 puppies born in foster care
• Adopted out 78 dogs and 123 cats
• Spayed/neutered 65 dogs and 122 cats before adoption
• Community pets spayed or neutered: 17 cats and 11 dogs
• Participated in Arizona Gives and Giving Tuesday fundraising
• Posted statistics to  www.shelteranimalscount.org
• Updated info on www.Guidestar.org   for 2020 Gold Level in transparency
• Participated in Tombstone Special Week-End Events (limited due to COVID)
•  In mid-April , due to COVID restrictions all off-site adoptions were discontinued and the shelter hours were changed to “By appointment only”.

This has been a different and sometimes difficult  year for all of us.  Personally, emotionally and in some cases financially. A lot of the animal shelters around the country have struggled with adoptions and in the beginning of the year huge intake volumes.  TSAS has been extremely lucky.  We have major contributors and supporters that kept us going with supplies and donations and adoptions.  When space permitted and we had volunteers/fosters available we were able to help other shelters in the county. In December we elected a new Board for 2021 that is very passionate about the shelter and how it works. We have a wonderful crew of volunteers that believe in the work we do and how to help the pets when they come in for, hopefully, a short stay. We have community support with residents and merchants helping to spread the word and hosting fundraisers.  Once again thank you for your shipments  and donations of supplies, your adoptions and your monetary donations. December  1 is National  Day of Giving or #GIVINGTUESDAY .  One of the biggest challenges  Tombstone Small Animal Shelter faces each year  is to make sure every pet guest that comes to the shelter gets veterinary care.  That they are in the best of health, to our knowledge, before going to their new homes.  Not everything can be tested for, but we try.  Every cat/kitten or litter mate is tested for feline leukemia and feline aids. They are given all age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, de-flead if age appropriate and spayed/neutered before going home.  Each dog/puppy is dewormed, de-flead if age appropriate,  vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped before going home.  All pets have dentals if recommended by their vets, given medication for ear infections, eye infections, ringworm. This year we have had  unusual  medical problems  with  In two cases of  Valley Fever.  In another couple of cases pancreatitis, in another canine lupus and another glaucoma.  We have had 2 dogs give birth to large litters of pups  while in foster. Several cats have also given birth to kittens in foster and we have brought in many litters from the streets.  Sometimes with all our care we lose one of the precious ones. They come to us in need of help and we do everything in our power for them. But their bodies just give up.  Thank goodness it is very few but it still hurts.  Every single pet guest at the shelter is like our very own.  We want you, the adopter to have the healthiest, happiest pet to take home.   But in order to accomplish this we need funds.  That’s where you, the donor comes in.  Now is a great time to help! Tombstone Small Animal Shelter would like to thank the Ryan Miele Endowment for Animal Welfare, administered by the Arizona Community Foundation for the $11,000 Grant just received.  The funds will be used for a variety of maintenance issues at the shelter, help with custodial care stipend and veterinary medical bills.  TSAS has been the recipient of these grants for many years and cannot thank the administrators of this grant enough.  Over the years these funds have allowed us to do much needed improvements and maintenance at the shelter and helped with all kinds of medical. Ryan Miele was a strong believer in Animal Welfare and TSAS would like to think she would be proud that we are continuing her work. Keeping animals safe, healthy and finding good homes for them.
