To all pet owners, have you made arrangements for your pets if something should happen to you and you can no longer care for that beloved pet? Many of you have made arrangements with friends or family and even put them in your wills with money allocated for their care. But the rest of you don’t want to talk about this subject. Have you ever seen a fatality car accident where a young person lost their life or an obituary for an older person and asked yourself ” I wonder if they have pets and who is taking care of them?” Things happen, Life happens, and pets are the last thing most people think about. For instance the older lady, we recently heard about, who is in ill health and because there is no family willing to help and take her two older dogs they will likely be euthanized. Check with your local animal rescues and shelters and you will see several older pets that have come to them because their owner passed away or was too ill to care for them. One example is Maya an 11 year old, who lived with her owner for over seven years until the owner passed and the remaining family didn’t want her. Or Charlotte the 9 year old that was adopted as a puppy but due to financial and housing issues was brought back to the shelter in ill health. They are scared, traumatized and very stressed. They don’t understand what is happening. But because they are older “Seniors” no one wants to adopt them. Some of the reasons are financial, they may require special food or medication, but a lot of the time it is because you have just lost your lifelong companion and you don’t want to go through that again. Animal shelters and rescue groups hear this all the time. So you are looking for a younger pet. BUT what happens to that pet when something happens to you first? They are then in the shelter like our seniors now, scared, traumatized and stressed. Please consider adopting an older Senior and giving them a good home. They may only have a few years left but let’s make those years the best that we can, with lots of love and attention. Check with your local shelters and rescue groups you will be amazed at the wonderful older pets you will find.
Tombstone Small Animal Shelter has three wonderful Senior Dogs
Katy is almost 9 years old. She is a black lab mix. Her only health issue is achy hips which glucosamine seems to help, and she is on Senior food. She has been in and out of the shelter for a year due to no fault of her own. She has lost some much needed weight and for the most part is very happy, but some days she seems a little depressed. Katy lived with her original family for over 6 years. She has to be the only pet but at her age she deserves all the attention any way.
KATY
Maya is an 11 year old shepherd mix. Some think even maybe a golden lab mix. She is in perfect health except like Katy she has a few achy hips and is on glucosamine. She also has a benign tumor under her arm pit that the Dr. has assured us is not an issue. Like most of us she could lose a few pounds. Maya would make a perfect family dog. She loves kids and attention. She is very friendly, and likes to play “keep away” with a ball. She acts and looks much younger then her age.

Charlotte aka Charly is a 9 year old heeler mix, white with brown spots. Charley had surgery recently to remove a very large crystal from her bladder, she also suffered from ulcers. Charley is still on medical treatment but is healing well and should be able to go to a great home soon. She will need to be on special prescription food for her kidneys. Charley is a quiet, friendly dog that would be a good family dog.
